Academy of Health Sciences @PGCC
After years of research, planning and consultations, representatives of Prince George's County Public Schools and Prince George's Community College opened Maryland's first Middle College High School in Largo, MD. Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George's Community College focuses on preparing students to enter a college program in the Health Sciences or Education fields. The students at the Academy of Health Sciences will receive by the end of their fourth year, a high school diploma and an Associate Degree in General Studies, with a concentration in the Health Sciences or an Associate of Arts in Teaching.
In July 2011, the first class of students, 100 incoming ninth-graders, arrived for a three week summer bridge program. Today, students are thriving and completing a rigorous curriculum to address Prince George's County need to build a qualified healthcare workforce. A class was added each year until the academy reached full enrollment, roughly 400 students in grades 9-12.
The Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) began in 2017. Articulation agreements between PGCPS and Bowie State University, University of Maryland, College Park and Howard University were designed to facilitate admissions into 4-year institutions for Bachelor Degrees in Education. In May of 2021, we graduated our first cohort of TPP students earning an Associate of Arts in Teaching through a rigorous Teacher Preparation Academy.
All Prince George’s County students are eligible to apply to the Academy of Health Sciences @PGCC. For more information on the application process, please visit our Specialty Programs Page.
