    Description

The Even Start Wheatley Family Learning Center (WFLC) is a family literacy program designed to help parents of Prince George's County Public Schools help their children succeed in school. The WFLC focuses on the educational needs of the whole family. It supports the philosophy that educational attainment of children and their parents is interrelated, and that improving the literacy skills of parents results in a positive effect on the educational experiences of their children.

    Goals

    1) Raise the education level of parents through instruction in basic skills
    2) Help parents gain the motivation, skills, and knowledge needed to become employed or to pursue further education or training
    3) Improve parenting knowledge and skills of the adult participant
    4) Enable parents to become familiar with and comfortable in school settings
    5) Increase the developmental skills of preschool children to better prepare them for academic and social success in school
    6) Improve the relationship of the parent and child through planned, structured interaction.
