POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is
primarily responsible for providing Assistive Technology (AT) service to
students, teachers and parents regarding the acquisition, implementation and
training for assistive technology assigned to individual students or
classrooms. The position requires knowledge and skills to use assistive technology
devices and strategies to support student access and participation during
instruction for augmentative communication and social interaction, language and
literacy, reading, math, and writing.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Provides
AT service to students with IEPs or with 504 Plans within their classroom
environment, including assessment, consultations, management of AT device
loans, and documentation of AT services provided;
Provides
training and technical support to students, direct service providers, and
parents of referred students;
Collaborates
with IEP team on the documentation of the student’s AT needs in the IEP for
compliance with federal and state regulations;
Manages
the delivery, documentation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrading of AT
equipment signed out to students and staff;
Attends
and participates in IEP/504 team meetings to monitor and facilitate discussion
of individual AT needs on the basis of evidence based practice;
Makes
home visits to setup technology in the home if recommended in the IEP/504 plan;
Creates
activities for modeling the use of assistive technology to support the Maryland
Voluntary State Curriculum Standards and IEP objectives;
Attends
monthly Assistive Technology team meetings;
Plans
and conducts workshops related to improving teacher and parent knowledge and
skills for using AT devices with students;
Develops
and maintains online and network resources that support teachers with the
integration of AT into instruction and can be included in AT report
recommendations;
Initiates
and maintains effective liaisons with other school divisions and professional
societies to maintain a current knowledge in assistive technology;
Maintains
professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum
development meetings and other professional activities;
Performs
any other related duties as assigned by the Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist
or other appropriate administrator; and
Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Teaching
experience that includes experience with using flexible instructional
technology and/or assistive technology in the classroom;
Comprehensive
knowledge for using computers, software and Internet resources for personal
productivity and instruction and how to integrate technology into classroom
instruction;
An
ability to train teachers in effective instructional techniques and strategies
using assistive technology;
Knowledge
of accommodations and modifications for students with special needs to gain
access to the general curriculum;
Skills
to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and
An
ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
students, staff, parents, and the public.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s
Degree from an accredited college or university or Master’s degree.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Maryland
teaching certification in special education or licensure in a related services
field with five (5) years of experience OR Maryland teaching certification in
general education with five (5) years of experience teaching students with
disabilities and integrating AT devices into instruction.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
