POSITION SUMMARY:
The teacher instructs, supervises, and assesses students synchronously
and asynchronously in a virtual learning environment. The teacher
provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical,
social and emotional development of students. This position monitors and
evaluates student performance, develops and implements plans to improve student
performance, and maintains required records and follows all required procedures
and practices.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Plans and
implements high quality synchronous (live) and asynchronous (flexible) virtual
instruction;
Meets
regularly with advisory students 1:1 to review, and assist with, time
management, organization, and academic progress in all courses;
Guides
students in creating a weekly calendar to assist in organizing assignments,
tests, project due dates, and sign up for office hours;
Utilizes
the PGCPS learning management system system(s) to provide students with course
syllabi that will outline content and assignments each week;
Communicates
with students and parents using communication tools embedded in the PGCPS
learning management system(s), as well as G Suite applications;
Plans, prepares, and delivers lessons,
assignments and instructional materials;
Establishes learning objectives consistent with
appraisal of student needs, curriculum framework and knowledge of human growth
and development;
Prepares, administers and corrects evaluations
and assessments and records results;
Selects and uses appropriate instructional
strategies including, but not limited to, lectures, group discussions,
demonstrations, modeling and multimedia teaching aids to present subject matter
to students;
Evaluates student progress using appropriate
assessment techniques;
Chooses appropriate
assessment tools, which allow students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery
of the content.
Maintains order and discipline in the classroom
conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to
protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
Creates a classroom environment that provides
for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to
achieve learning objectives;
Counsels students when academic and adjustment
problems arise;
Models and
educates students on the importance of digital citizenship;
Confers with parents/guardians and students
regarding progress/problems of assigned students; arranges and participates in
teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary;
Maintains accurate and complete records as
required by law, Board Policy and Administrative Regulation;
Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment,
textbooks, materials and facilities;
Attends and actively participates in
staff/faculty meetings and provides input regarding the planning of instruction
goals, objectives and methods;
Improves skills and knowledge base in current
trends, research and methodology in instructional techniques, technology,
multi-cultural content, problem solving and interdisciplinary connections;
Plans and oversees purposeful assignments for
paraprofessional educators, student teachers and volunteers, when applicable;
and
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Demonstrated ability to provide differentiated
instructional techniques that inspire, motivate and meet the individual
educational needs of all students;
Demonstrated ability to develop and nurture an
atmosphere and educational environment conducive to the intellectual, physical,
social and emotional development of all students;
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of
strategies in monitoring and evaluating student performance and developing and
implementing plans to improve student performance;
Demonstrated use of a digital learning platform,
preferably Edgenuity or Canvas, including navigation, functionality, reporting
and the ability to make data-driven decisions;
Demonstrated use of digital curriculum databases
and tools such as, Literacy Pro, SORA, IRead, IReady, Achieve 3000, Carnegie,
Dreambox, and Newsela;
Demonstrated use of technology tools such as
assessments, surveys, discussion boards, Nearpod, Pear Deck, Book Creator,
Kami, Flipgrid, and other applications;
Demonstrated proficiency with G Suite and
Microsoft Office applications;
Demonstrated proficiency communicating with
students and parents using digital communication tools, preferably the Canvas
learning management system;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with
students, parents, colleagues, administrators, office staff and other members
of the school community;
Ability to work with diverse populations;
ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and
multicultural education;
Demonstrates basic troubleshooting skills and
addresses basic technical issues as they arise.
Extensive
knowledge of digital tools, learner-centered instructional strategies and
current practices that leverage technology for learner collaboration, discipline-specific
technologies, tools, and resources
Knowledge of school organization, goals and
objectives, curriculum, teaching techniques, current trends, research and
materials of instruction in field of specialization;
Excellent knowledge and understanding of the
teaching and learning process; and
Excellent oral and communication skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited
college or university in the applicable field of education required; Master’s
degree preferred. A minimum of one (1)
year of successful blended learning instructional experience required. A
minimum of one (1) year of successful secondary instructional experience is
preferred. Completion of the “Online Teaching in Maryland” course and the “MSDE
Online Course Shadow Experience” is preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Holds or is eligible for a Standard Professional Certificate appropriate
to the area of assignment issued by the Maryland State Department of Education;
Advanced Professional Certificate preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Educators are expected to report to the school/work location on a scheduled or as needed basis, typically 2-3 days a week. The employee agrees to designate a separate workspace in the alternate work location for the purposes of teleworking and will maintain this area in a safe condition, free from hazards and other dangers to the employee and PGCPS’s equipment.
