POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the
Associate Superintendent for High Schools, the Coordinating Supervisor -
Interscholastic Athletics is responsible for overseeing all operations within
the Department of Interscholastic Athletics, ensuring quality control relative
to the primary focus areas for which the department is accountable: (a) to
achieve success in all academic endeavors; (b) to establish and maintain viable
interscholastic sports programs for students; (c) to provide qualified athletic
directors and coaches at all schools; (d) to provide professional development
related to all facets of interscholastic athletics; and (e) material resource
acquisition, allocation, and distribution relative to identified systemic
interscholastic athletics and student priorities. The incumbent will interpret program
standards, policies and regulations to staff, the Board of Education and the
public; serve as the liaison to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic
Association, Prince George's County Public Secondary Schools Athletic
Association, the National Athletic Administrators Association, and the National
Federation of State High School Associations.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Monitors and provides direction to the Supervisor of Interscholastic
Athletics regarding the oversight, monitoring and analysis of the school based
Athletic Directors;
Manages and evaluates personnel and services related to the
interscholastic athletic program in all aspects of program operations,
including monitoring of school based operations and productivity relative to
identified systemic priorities and long-range goals and strategic planning;
Monitors all phases and facets of the interscholastic athletics program
delivery, serving as system spokesperson to articulate policies, procedures,
and processes;
Develops departmental professional development opportunities to ensure
that the supervisor, principals, school based athletic directors, and coaches
develop the knowledge and competencies requisite for maintaining effective
program operations, including assurance that systemic priorities are both
addressed and satisfactorily operationalized;
Initiates and oversees all facets of annual budget development for the
Department of Interscholastic Athletics and establishes and modifies departmental
priorities in relationship to budget allocations;
Plans, conducts and/or participates in a variety of task force and
policy-making committees at the system, state, and national level;
Serves as liaison and outreach coordinator for parent and community
groups relative to operations of the Department of Interscholastic Athletics,
including PTSA, School Booster Clubs, and community group presentations;
Appoints Prince George's County Public School System personnel to the
MPSSAA Board of Control, Standing Committees, and Sports Committees;
Serves as the spokesperson/liaison regarding Interscholastic Athletics
for newspaper, radio, television and other media outlets as needed;
Serves as the liaison to the Office of Planning and Architectural
Services (new construction), Office of the General Counsel, Office of Risk
Management, Office of Communications, etc., regarding interscholastic
athletics;
Provides final oversight and approval in Oracle for athletic coaches
payroll; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of the Interscholastic Athletic Programs of the State
of Maryland and Prince George's County;
Thorough knowledge of the federal, state and PGCPS policies, procedures,
rules and regulations related to athletics;
Knowledge of current research, trends and federal, state and local laws
and regulations governing athletics;
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint Oracle Financial
Applications, Oracle iExpense, Oracle iProcurement, Oracle iRecruitment, along
with other computer applications; and
Excellent organizational skills, along with excellent oral and written
communication skills as well as human relation skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master's degree from an accredited
college or university required with five (5) years of successful teaching
experience, and three (3) years in the administration and supervision of high
school athletics.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Maryland Standard Professional
Certification (SPC)/Advanced Professional Certification (APC) with endorsement
as Administrator I.None Required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees and provides guidance and
direction to the unit staff.
