POSITION SUMMARY:
The
Electrician I works as a journeyman electrician in the maintenance, repair and extension
of electrical wiring and equipment in school buildings. This is highly skilled
work involving responsibility for the performance of difficult and specialized
electrical maintenance and repair operations. General assignments are received
from superiors, but Electricians I are expected to plan details of each job and
carry it to completion with limited supervision. Supervision may be exercised
over the work of an Apprentice or a Trades Helper.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Runs underground cables and strings overhead
wires; installs wire and repairs electric transformers;
Wires buildings and makes additions to existing
wiring;
Installs outlets and wiring for computers and
computer networks;
Installs and repairs fluorescent and general
lighting fixtures and connections;
Installs and maintains remote control devices
for magnetic motor connections;
Installs, adjusts and maintains utility motors and
appliances; repairs and maintains electric motors; repairs kitchen appliances,
motors and boiler equipment;
Installs electric call bells and buzzers,
installs and repairs fire alarm systems and associated wiring and devices; and
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Good knowledge of the standard
practices, tools and terminology of the electrical trade;
Good knowledge of elementary electrical
theory;
Ability to make repairs to complicated
electrical wiring, fixtures and equipment; and
Ability to understand and follow oral
and written instructions.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma, GED or completion of a vocational school program
or apprenticeship. Some experience as a
Journeyman Electrician.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of Prince George’s County Journeyman Electrician License (CB-402000 DR-2)
required; Master Electrician License preferred.
Possession
of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with driving record indicating five (5)
or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been
accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board
of Education vehicle.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervisory
responsibilities may be exercised over the work of an Apprentice or Trades
Helper.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
