POSITION SUMMARY:


  The principal responsibility of work in this class involves the safe and efficient operation of tractor trailers to transport equipment, materials and supplies. When the operation of tractor-trailer is not required, an incumbent is expected to perform other duties as assigned; such work is performed alone or with a crew and may involve assignments as a working leader. The work is performed under general supervision and is appraised relative to the care, safety and effectiveness with which vehicles are operated as well as the work produced when assigned to other duties.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Driving Tractor-trailer trucks to pick up, transport and deliver temporary buildings and/or equipment, materials and supplies.

Assuring the proper handling and distribution of cargo;

Servicing and making minor repairs on vehicles;

Reporting any damages or malfunctions to vehicles; 

Loading and unloading vehicles;

Driving other motorized equipment such as dump, sanitation, van, crew, flatbed and pick-up trucks and tractors;

Operating attachments to vehicles including snowplows, cinder spreaders, mowers, bush hogs, chippers and power sprayers; and

Operating air compressor.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Good knowledge of traffic and highway safety rule and regulations and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents;

Working knowledge of loading methods and techniques;

Skill in the operation of attachments to vehicles and the operation of materials handling equipment;

Ability to service vehicles, make minor repairs or adjustments and detect needed repairs;

Ability to understand verbal and written orders;

Ability to adhere to schedules and follow an assigned route when required;

Ability to perform heavy manual labor while loading and unloading vehicles and as otherwise assigned; and

Ability to keep routine records and report upon work performed.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Considerable experience or schooling in the operation of automotive equipment including the operation of a tractor-trailer and completion of the tenth school grade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (Class A Commercial Driver’s License), at time of appointment, and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
