POSITION SUMMARY:
Under
the general supervision of the Automotive Foreman II and III, the Garage Coordinator
II plans the daily garage operations and provides support to bus lot based
garages. This is skilled work involving
extensive knowledge of an automotive technician with some experience in a
supervisory capacity. The incumbent of
this position will plan and administer the activities and operations of a
garage during the assigned shift. The
Garage Coordinator II will work with the Garage Coordinator I, Service Writer
and the Automotive Parts Manager to prioritize all garage work order
repairs. The incumbent will provide
oversight and guidance to the Garage Coordinator I, Service Writer, Automotive
Parts Manager, Automotive Mechanic II, Automotive Mechanic I, Trades Helper,
Shop Store Clerk and Upholster.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Oversees the daily operations of the
garage to include running reports, scheduling workload, coordinating emergency
road call services and support, overseeing inventory control system,
maintaining accountability for parts and equipment, and requisitioning parts
and supplies;
Assists the Central Garage Supervisor in
preparing specifications for the purchase of new and replacement equipment;
Oversees the work of automotive
mechanics and other shop personnel on assigned shift; supports Automotive
Foreman II and III with providing supervision and assisting with performance
evaluations for assigned personnel;
Performs school bus and other vehicle
maintenance as required; conducts quality assurance inspections on all work
performed on assigned shift;
Ensures that tools and repair parts are
available to perform all specific repairs to the fleet;
Makes decisions with regard to the
maintenance and repair of school board vehicles with minimal supervision;
Ensures a safe working environment and
participates in the training of all shop employees, including ongoing
cross-training in all related skill areas with emphasis on mechanical skills
enhancement and material inventory responsibilities;
Ensures that all school board vehicles,
parts and materials are properly procured, inventoried and dispensed in
accordance with internal guidelines;
Assists other garage coordinators in the
daily operations of all school board vehicles, materials, operations,
scheduling and workforce support;
Monitors warranties to ensure that parts
and equipment under warranty are serviced as required; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of the principles of
operation of HVAC, hydraulic systems, and diesel and gasoline engines;
Thorough knowledge of the Maryland
Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) occupational hazards and safety
precautions of the trade;
Ability to understand and carry out
complex oral and written instructions;
Ability to make simple arithmetical
computations and tabulations;
Skilled in the use and care of test
equipment, hand tools and special tools needed to make repairs on all school
board equipment;
Ability to plan, layout and oversee the
work of all assigned personnel in the garage;
Experience in the use of Faster Fleet
Management System or a similar platform;
Ability to review and edit information
and data (i.e., accountability of parts, mechanics time, etc.); and
Possess
a high level of mechanical aptitude; be in good physical condition with the
ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
A
completion/graduate of a standard high school, GED, trade or vocational school
course(s) in automobile and truck, vehicle maintenance with gasoline, diesel,
hybrid and electric vehicles. A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a
skilled automotive and medium truck technician, involving repairs of buses,
automobiles, and related equipment to include experience in the service and
repair of Cummins, IHC International, Mack engines and Allison automatic
transmissions.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor
Vehicle License with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current
points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result
of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education
vehicle. Possession of a Commercial
Driver’s License (CDL) Class "B" with endorsements "P"
(Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) required or the ability to obtain
within the probationary period for new employees or within 6 months of
obtaining the position for current PGCPS employees; CDL Class "A"
with "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus and Air Brake)
preferred. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications are strongly
encouraged.

Provides
oversight and guidance to assigned personnel.

While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
