POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Grounds Foreman I oversees the work of equipment operators, laborers, trades helpers and cement finishers engaged primarily in routine maintenance and repair operations on school grounds or at the shop facility site location. Work may include repair work in concrete, blacktop, playground equipment, fencing, turf, and maintaining field tractors and mowers requiring emergency repair work. Areas of work and standards to be met are discussed and assigned by the Grounds Foreman II or his assistants and the work performed is checked in progress and upon completion. After receipt of work orders the Grounds Foreman I makes an on-site determination of all work requirements, plans the work for his crew, secures the necessary materials and equipment and carries the work to completion.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Supervises the work of equipment operators, laborers, trades helpers, and cement finishers in all phases of ground maintenance and repair; supervises routine checks on all equipment being used to ascertain that equipment is in a safe working condition and that it is being properly used and cared for; performs minor repairs required on all equipment used;

Operates tractors and other equipment necessary in the performance of grounds maintenance and repair; supervises the grading, fertilizing, seeding, and landscaping operations on school system grounds; supervises and performs tree trimming and removal, grass cutting and trim work, concrete and blacktop work, as well as repair and installation of all fencing and playground equipment and other operations;

Performs shop facility site location work involving making mechanical repairs to small engines, snow plows, tractors, mowers, and other power equipment including: bleeding tractor fuel injector lines and "startup" after a diesel fuel tank runs empty, changing flat tires, and repairing mower decks, gear boxes and drive shafts; schedules tractor repairs with Central Garage and transfers equipment to various locations for maintenance personnel; orders and maintains a parts inventory for repairs;

Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions; makes and adjusts work assignments; maintains time and work order records; prepares work reports;

Trains and instructs subordinates in the skills required for the performance of their work; performs or assists in performing the more difficult or skilled tasks as required;

Performs related work as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License (commercial operator's license Class A) with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer points of which no more than (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. (See Prince George's County Public Schools' Bulletin P-1-88, dated July 21, 1987.);

Considerable knowledge of standard tools, equipment, and materials used in the performance of grounds maintenance work, equipment repair and servicing, and turf maintenance;

Ability to calculate and determine the quantity and types of materials and equipment needed in the performance of the work and to carry the work to its conclusion;

Ability to assign and supervise the work of others;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Skill in the use of hand tools and equipment used in ground maintenance and repair work;

Knowledge of hazards of and necessary safety precautions required in the performance of grounds maintenance work.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High School graduate or vocational school course with sufficient experience in grounds maintenance work to meet the requirements for the skills specified; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
