POSITION SUMMARY:
The
Head Mail Clerk is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the central mail
room. An employee in this class is responsible for all phases of the work in
the central mail room. Constant attention and review of the work in progress is
required to insure accuracy, timeliness of production and safe and efficient
delivery of all mail. Instructions are received pertaining to special
situations or major changes in operations. General supervision is received from
the Director of Purchasing and Supply.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Supervises and participates in the sorting,
weighing, stamping and sealing of United States and departmental mail, and in
picking up and delivering on a scheduled basis at the Central Office;
Assists in establishing routes and schedules;
Oversees Mail Clerk positions;
Provides on-the-job training for subordinate
employees in processing the mail;
Prepares required reports;
Ensures mail/courier schedules and
deadlines are met;
Keeps distribution list up-to-date;
Assists in the receipt and distribution of
material, supplies, and equipment as directed;
May drive motor vehicles in making pick-up and
deliveries within and outside the Central Offices; and
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge of current postal
regulations and rates for the various classes of mail;
Experience in performing general
clerical or mail room work;
Ability to demonstrate a high degree of
responsibility for the safe and efficient handling of mail;
Ability to supervise a group of
subordinate employees;
Ability to rapidly and accurately sort
and ensure mail delivery;
Ability to operate mail processing equipment;
Ability to write legibly;
Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships;
Ability to lift moderately heavy
articles, and to do considerable standing and walking; and
Must be in good physical condition.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a standard high school diploma or GED; with
two (2) year mail service experience.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with
driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more
than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations
occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
