POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor - Maintenance, the Heavy Equipment Operator I performs skilled work in the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, including bulldozers, road graders, and similar equipment.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Operating heavy equipment in connection with the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, water supply and distribution systems, park systems, playgrounds, athletic fields, school building lawn areas and related structures;

Operating a bulldozer or grade in marking gross transfers of earth as an initial phase of roadway, playground, athletic field or utility projects;

Operating a road grader in the shaping or grading to stakes of roadways, playgrounds, athletic fields, park areas and similar development;

Operating a bulldozer in excavating land as well as backfilling excavations and trenches;

Operating power shovels and heavy backhoes;

Servicing and performing preventive maintenance on equipment;  and

Assisting in repair activities.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Knowledge of the operational and care characteristics of one or more major pieces of heavy equipment used in excavating, leveling, and similar or related earth-moving activities;

Considerable knowledge of traffic laws, ordinance, and rules as they relate to heavy equipment operation;

Working knowledge of mechanical components of equipment operated in order to enable operator to detect malfunctions before serious equipment damage results;

Ability to supervise, if necessary, a small group of unskilled workers;

Ability to operate heavy equipment skillfully, and safely, and according to prescribed operational and safety standards; and

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, as well as to work independently in the performance of assigned tasks.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High School diploma and considerable progressively responsible experience in construction and maintenance equipment operation, including responsible heavy equipment work.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class A - Commercial Driver's License), at time of appointment, and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see PGCPS Bulletin P-1-88 dated July 27, 1987).

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
