POSITION SUMMARY:


  Provide clerical and related support to the operation of the school media center in an elementary, middle or high school. Work involves frequent and responsible contact with students, parents and the school’s administrative and instructional staff. In addition, work may include assignments in support and guidance of other administrative and program activities such as data entry and general office.      

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Assists librarian in the instruction of media center procedures;

Maintains records of items received, stored, issued, and returned, and file catalog cards;

Assists in gathering statistics, including budget data for reporting purposes;

Answers a variety of telephone and other inquiries relative to media center matters where routine or policies are clearly established;

Assists librarian in instructing students and staff in the operation and limited preventative maintenance of instructional equipment and materials;

Operates instructional equipment and other general office equipment as required;

Assists in the development of graphic material for instructional purposes;

May assist in processing a variety of student and school administrative information and data using remote terminals;

Assist students in the circulation of library materials, use of the online catalog, and use of online database resources;

Performs a variety on independent clerical and computer-related work such as inputting statistical data, preparing reports, checking accuracy of cataloged materials under supervision;

Furnishes circulation desk with needed supplies on a daily basis;

Maintains library materials that need to be mended, discarded and/ or replaced;

Sorts books, publications, and other items according to established procedure and return them to shelves, files, or other designated storage areas;

Processes new materials including books, audiovisual materials, and computer software;

Assists School Library Media Specialist with class library schedules;

Assists students or parent helpers in the daily operations;

Maintains attractive appearance of the Media Center; and

Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Good oral or written communication skills;

Ability to work with pupils, teachers, parents and administrative personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and good morale;

Ability to learn instructional materials routine and techniques and to apply this knowledge to work problems; ability to learn information processing and data entry form remote terminals;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Ability to operate general office and instructional equipment such as copiers, personal computers, multimedia projector and other related equipment; and

Ability to handle confidential matters with a high degree of professionalism. 


 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of a standard high school diploma or GED with at least two (2) years of volunteer or paid experience working with students with special needs.  Experience in an educational setting preferred.  Employees in Title I Schools must meet Title I requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
