POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor - STEM, the Instructional Specialist - STEM is responsible for assisting in the monitoring of STEM-related instruction, educational resources, STEM-related initiatives and executing administrative responsibilities as required.  The Instructional Specialist - STEM assists the Instructional Supervisor - STEM with developing, executing and providing systemic STEM-centric opportunities to educators and parents. The Instructional Specialist - STEM assists the Instructional Supervisor - STEM with all facets of curriculum development, professional development for staff and program evaluation.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Assists in the development and implementation in the areas of elementary, middle and high school STEM curriculum, instruction, and classroom management of STEM materials;

Assists in providing direct support to all educators in the area STEM-centric lessons;

Assists in the coordination of both short and long-range planning for the improvement of the STEM program in PGCPS to include the arts making the program truly STEAM;

Assists in the development and implementation of a professional development STEM program for all content educators including the designing and teaching of state approved workshops, summer institutes, after-school programs, and STEM leadership conferences;

Assists in the preparation of PreK-12 STEM curriculum documents, correlation of instructional materials and units of study;

Assists in the selection of STEM instructional materials correlated to the science, mathematics and other content areas’ curriculum frameworks;

Assists in providing area and school-level workshops on curricular issues, teaching strategies, and behavior management in collaboration with the Office of Professional Learning and Leadership;

Leads PreK-12 teacher leaders and other instructional personnel in assisting educators directly with aligning classroom STEM strategies to the taught curriculum in all content areas;

Collaborates with other curriculum and instruction departments in support of systemic program initiatives related to STEM;

Assists with the planning and implementing of special events in science and math including the Regional Science Fair and Kids for Science;

Assists in monitoring the implementation of the PreK-12 STEM program district wide; and

Assists in the management of budgets and purchase orders.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Knowledge of current trends in STEM education, including constructivist pedagogy, performance-based standards and assessments, Maryland’s STEM Standards of Practice, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and designing of STEM Project Based Activities;

Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for educators, principals, parents and other stakeholders;

Knowledge of state standards, NGSS and alternative modes of assessment;

Experience in writing curriculum framework guides for science or math or an integrated curriculum desired;

Thorough knowledge of STEM pedagogy and current STEM trans disciplinary practices required;

Experience in leading staff development initiatives; and

Demonstrated skill in effective human relations and in oral and written communications.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor’s degree in science education, science content, mathematics education, or mathematics content and Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, science or mathematics education, school administration and supervision required.  A minimum of five (5) years of science or math teaching experience required; middle and/or high school experience preferred.



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Advanced Professional Certificate; Administrator I certification required.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
