POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor, the Instructional Specialist for Elementary Reading/English Language Arts, PreK-5, is responsible for assisting the Supervisor of Elementary Reading/English Language Arts, PreK-5, by working as a liaison between the Office of Special Education and ESOL to support department initiatives and to provide professional development specifically related to Elementary Reading/English Language Arts.  The position is also responsible for monitoring the implementation of all reading intervention programs, data analysis for Performance Management, and related duties.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Assists the Supervisor of Elementary Reading/English Language Arts, PreK-5, in creating and implementing systemic programs of staff development in all aspects of the Reading/English Language Arts program for the PreK-5 teaching staff, administrators, and other departments supporting Reading/English Language Arts instruction;

Provides systemic, area and school-level workshops, consultation, and direct support on curricular issues, and use of materials;

Monitors the implementation of Leveled Literacy Intervention through trainings, observations, and follow-up meetings (CEIS grant);

Monitors data analysis for Performance Management;

Provides formal teacher observations using the Framework for Teaching Rubric (Descriptors of Practice) and written feedback for informal observations of teachers and reading specialists;

Assists in the planning and implementation of community workshops and partnerships;

Attends meetings and performs other duties as designated by the Supervisor, Coordinating Supervisor, and/or Director of Curriculum and Instruction; and  

Maintains proficiency in instructional technologies.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

A minimum of three years of successful teaching experience in Reading/English Language Arts - elementary preferred;

Thorough knowledge of Reading/English Language Arts pedagogy and current best practices, including current trends in reading research, writing, and comprehension instruction;

Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for a variety of audiences;

Knowledge of state standards and assessment, Pre K-5;

Effective demonstrable knowledge of effective teaching techniques and strategies;

Demonstrated ability to analyze data and provide alternative solutions to problems;

Proven ability to develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with all levels of employees; and

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.

Demonstrated leadership and administrative competency;

Broad knowledge of computer skills, to include but not limited to: Excel, Access, Power Point; and

Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and effective human relations skills.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Reading, or Master's Degree in Elementary Education or Curriculum and Instruction with Reading Specialist Certification.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Advanced Professional Certificate in Elementary Education; Administration I Certificate required.


 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Training of teachers, reading specialists, building administrators and/or central office personnel.
