POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor – Instrumental Music, the Instructional Specialist – Instrumental Music will be responsible for providing support to all teachers in the area of instrumental music curriculum and instruction. These responsibilities include facilitating the development of best practices, implementation and assessment of curriculum and instruction, supporting enrichment programs, professional development and the analysis of budget and program data.  The Instructional Specialist will maintain high program standards and will assist in ensuring the programs are in compliance with federal, state and local mandates. 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Providing direct support to all teachers in instrumental music curriculum, instruction and classroom management under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor with the vision and direction of the K-12 instrumental music instructional program; including curriculum development, scheduling, assessment and implementation;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor with performing formal observations of all non-tenured instrumental music teachers and observes tenured teachers as requested;

Demonstrates best practices and knowledge of curriculum through demonstration lessons and modeling;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor in providing support and leadership to the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) specialty programs;

Plans, prepares and conducts instrumental music teacher professional development, including the Professional Educators’ Induction Program (PEIP) and other workshops;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor with the vision and direction for the K-12 instrumental music enrichment programs, including solo and, honor bands and honor orchestras, band performance assessments, orchestra performance assessments, Music Day activities, marching and jazz band showcases, and other collaborations;

Assists with the coordination of event logistic and program planning, including technical adjudicators, equipment, facilities, budgeting, materials and personnel needs;

Coordinates the review, approval, acquisition and distribution of appropriate equipment, materials, and print and non-print resources to support all facets of the instrumental music program; assists with updating the equipment bid each year for the Department of Purchasing;

Collaborates within and across Curriculum and Instruction, as well as other divisions and departments, emphasizing strategic planning and problem solving related to the state and local standards;

Supports human resources efforts by screening instrumental music applicants, and determining music itinerant staff pairings based upon enrollment data and requirements of the program in each school;

Communicates, collaborates and interfaces with MSDE, other state representatives, the Maryland Music Educator’s Association and other local school system representatives; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Thorough knowledge of best practices, curriculum and pedagogy in instrumental music;

Ability to analyze student performance and participation data for instructional implications;

Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions;

Experience with and knowledge of various school schedules which maximize the use of instructional time;

Knowledge of state and national standards, benchmarks, and alternative modes of assessment;

Computer literacy, including proficiency with Google suite, Microsoft Excel and Adobe suite;

Experience in writing curriculum and assessments desired; and

Demonstrated skills in effective human relations and oral and written communications.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, music, performing arts or a closely related field required. A minimum of five (5) years of successful instrumental music teaching experience required.



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Maryland Professional Certificate with Administrator I endorsement required. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.
