POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor – Vocal/General Music, the Instructional Specialist – Vocal/General Music will be responsible for providing support to all teachers in the area of vocal and general music curriculum and instruction. These responsibilities include facilitating the development of best practices, implementation and assessment of curriculum and instruction, supporting enrichment programs, professional development and the analysis of budget and program data.  The Instructional Specialist will maintain high program standards and will assist in ensuring the programs are in compliance with federal, state and local mandates. 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Provides direct support to all classroom teachers in the area of vocal and general music curriculum, instruction and classroom management under the direction of the Instructional Supervisor;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor in both short and long-range planning for the improvement of the music program;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor in the development and implementation of a professional development program for teachers of vocal and general music, including the designing and teaching of state approved workshops, summer institutes, after school programs and music leadership conferences;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor in the preparation of curriculum documents, correlation of instructional materials documents, and units of study;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor in the selection of instructional materials correlated to the vocal and general music curriculum frameworks;

Provides regional and school-level workshops on curricular issues, teaching strategies and behavior management in collaboration with the Department of Staff Development;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor in developing applications for grants;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor with the planning and implementation of special events in Vocal and General Music;

Assists the Instructional Supervisor with the monitoring and implementation of the vocal and general music program district wide; and

Oversees projects as designated by the Instructional Supervisor of Vocal and General Music.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Full knowledge of current trends in Music and creative and performing arts education;

Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for teachers and principals;

Knowledge of state standards, benchmarks and alternative modes of assessment;

Experience writing curriculum framework guides for vocal and/or general music, or an integrated curriculum;

Experience in writing and managing grants and budgets desired;

Thorough knowledge of music pedagogy and current best practices;

Demonstrated skills in effective human relations and in oral and written communications.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, music, performing arts or a closely related field required. A minimum of five (5) years of successful vocal and/or general music teaching experience required.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Maryland Professional Certificate with Administrator I endorsement required. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.
