POSITION SUMMARY:


The Instructional Supervisor-Instrumental Music has the overall responsibility to assist in the planning, developing, implementing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating of the K-12 instrumental music program in the District.  The Instructional Supervisor assists the Coordinating Manager in developing an operational framework for the unit, developing a budget based on an analysis of needs, and implementing the process and procedures for evaluating programs and personnel in unit.  The Supervisor will assist in ensuring the programs are in compliance with federal, state and local mandates. In addition, the Specialist will maintain high standards for students, staff and parent satisfaction within Prince George’s County Public Schools.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Provides vision and direction for the K – 12 instrumental music instructional and enrichment program;

Supervises all facets of the K – 12 Instrumental Music program in all schools by assisting instrumental music teachers and administration with program planning, development, material and equipment acquisition, inventory, curriculum, scheduling, and budgeting.

Plans, prepares, and conducts instrumental music teacher training including Professional Educators’ Induction Program, Non-tenured teacher workshops, Fine Arts Summer Institute, Prince George’s Artist Teacher Institute, and other workshops throughout the year;

Performs formal observation of all non-tenured instrumental music teachers and observe tenured teachers as requested;

Coordinates the review, approval, acquisition, and distribution of appropriate equipment, materials, print and non-print resources to support all facets of Instrumental Music program planning, development, and implementation;

Collaborates and coordinates with Purchasing in updating the Instrumental Music Equipment bid each year;

Plans and executes all facets of Instrumental Music Enrichment and Performance Assessment Programs including Solo and Ensemble (Elementary, Middle, and High), Middle and High School Honor Bands and Honor Orchestras, Band Performance Assessments, Orchestra Performance Assessment, PGCPS Elementary Music Day, Marching Band Showcase, Jazz Band Showcase, and Summer Instrumental Music Experience for elementary students; Coordinates all logistics of events including technical adjudicators, equipment, facilities, materials, and personnel needs.

Provides support and leadership to the Visual and Performing Arts Specialty Programs;

Provides ongoing interaction and articulation within and across the Division of Academics, other divisions and departments, and at the systemic level, emphasizing strategic planning and problem solving related the state standards;

Supports Human Resources by screening all instrumental music applicants, determining elementary instrumental music itinerant staff pairings, and itinerate staffing requirements based upon enrollment data and requirements of the instrumental music program in each school;

Communicates, collaborates and interfaces with MSDE,  State representatives, Maryland Music Educator’s Association leadership and other local school system representatives;

Develops and monitors system requirements for Instrumental Music; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Minimum of 5 years of successful Instrumental Music teaching;

Extensive experience in the area of budget development and fiscal management;

Demonstrated administrative skills;

Knowledge, skill, and understanding related to the instrumental music program in PGCPS;

Knowledge of current trends in Instrumental Music including pedagogy, performance based assessment, instructional materials facilities, instructional materials; A commitment to professional growth in the field of instrumental music as demonstrated by professional conference attendance and leadership at the county or state level; 

Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for teachers, principals and parents; knowledge of state standards, benchmarks and alternative assessment, PreK-12;

Experience in event planning as it relates to performance assessments, honor bands/orchestras, showcases, and other enrichment programs;

Experience and expertise in personnel and program evaluation;

Expertise in the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional development programs and initiatives;

Experience in writing grant proposals and monitoring grant progress and budget

Excellent communication (written and oral) and technology skills;

Excellent human relations skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Master’s degree from accredited college or university in Music Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and/or Administration/Supervision. 

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Holds or is eligible an Advanced Professional Certificate required in Music K-12 and Administration I required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Assist in overseeing and providing guidance to the unit staff.
