POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Special Education Coordinating Supervisor, the Secondary Special Education Instructional Supervisor will oversee instructional program planning, development and implementation in Special Education Instruction. Keep abreast of national and state trends in special education to obtain information for essential instructional improvements.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Oversee and provide support to all secondary Instructional Specialists in Special Education instructional best practices;

Supervise school level and systemic professional learning activities on secondary curricular issues, teaching strategies, IEP development and behavior management;

Provide leadership on the implementation of instructional programs for students with disabilities;

Coordinate with specialists in assisting building administrators, classroom teachers and related services personnel in designing and implementing an individual educational plan;

Plan and implement monthly staff meetings for secondary Special Education Instructional Specialists;

Collaborate with the Department of Human Resources on appropriate placements of special education teachers, paraprofessionals and itinerant special education instructional specialists;

Determine staffing allotments for all middle schools, high schools and alternative schools;

Collaborate with the Office of Talent Development on planning, implementation, and evaluation of professional learning activities;

Develop program expansion proposals including staffing, instructional models, budget and professional learning;

Collaborate with other school system departments in the process of identification, evaluation, and programming of student with disabilities;

Facilitate and monitor revisions of administrative policies and procedures maintained by the Department of Special Education; and

Perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Considerable knowledge of public school administration policies and procedures;

Considerable knowledge of design, implementation and evaluation of professional learning programs and initiatives;

Experience and skill in personnel and program evaluation;

Knowledge of skill in the professional roles, functions and disciplines within the department;

Demonstrate leadership and administrative competency;

Demonstrate ability to analyze data and provide alternative solutions to problems;

Excellent written and oral communication skills; and

Effective human relations skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Master’s degree from an accredited institution in educational administration or a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in education or special education with course work in education administration; five years in a leadership position, and five years of successful teaching experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in this position.



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrative I Certification.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Assists Director & Coordinating Supervisor of Instruction in overseeing, providing guidance and direction to the office and staff in Special Education:  K-12 Instruction Office.
