POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the
Coordinating Supervisor, the Reading/English Language Arts Instructional
Supervisor (6-8) is responsible for monitoring department programs and
initiatives and executing administrative responsibilities, as required. The Reading/English Language Arts
Instructional Supervisor (6-8) assists the Coordinating Supervisor and the
Director of Curriculum and Instruction in developing aligned curriculum
documents, providing professional development for staff, and developing a
budget based on analysis of needs.
Special assignments are received through conferences, written
instructions, and requests from the Director to the Coordinating
Supervisor.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Working
with the Coordinating Supervisor on all facets of program planning and
development and associated budgets (including grants) for the Reading/English
Language Arts office, including identification of program priorities in the
Master Plan for Reading/English Language Arts 6-8 as it relates to facilitation
of major workshops and meetings;
Assisting
with the coordination of all facets of curriculum and program evaluation for
the 6-8 Reading/English Language Arts program;
Supporting
all facets of the 6-8 Reading/English Language Arts program by providing
ongoing staff training, and developing programs of study to upgrade the skills
and knowledge base on the 6-8 Reading/English Language Arts teaching staff;
Coordinating
the review, approval, acquisition, and distribution of appropriate equipment,
materials and print and non-print resources to support staff and students for
Reading/English Language Arts program planning, development, and
implementation, including Special Education and English Language Learners;
Assist
with providing ongoing interaction and articulation within and across the
Department of Curriculum and Instruction, other departments and divisions, and
at the systemic level, emphasizing strategic planning and problem solving
related the state standards and Common Core State Standards;
Understanding
of the Framework for Teaching (FFT) and the ability to conduct formal and
informal observations; and
Other
duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Minimum five (5)
years successful instructional experience in Secondary Reading/English Language
Arts;
Sound knowledge,
skill and understanding related to the major content area assigned;
Demonstrated
administrative, public speaking and human relations skills;
Demonstrated
expertise in writing (required) and administering grants (preferred);
Knowledge of
current research and trends in Reading/English Language Arts;
Demonstrated
competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for teachers
and/or principals and parents;
Thorough knowledge
of state standards, Common Core State Standards, assessments, and alternative
assessments, 6-8;
Experience in
personnel and program evaluation;
Extensive expertise
in the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional development
programs and initiatives; and
Excellent written
and oral communication and technology skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s Degree
from an accredited college or university in English, with Reading Certification
(preferred) or Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with Reading
Certification.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Advanced
Professional Certificate; Certification in Secondary English (or
Reading/English Language Arts) Education (grades 6-8) and Administrator I
certification required; Administrator II certification preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in overseeing and providing
guidance to the unit staff/teachers.
