POSITION SUMMARY:
Insulates
and repairs insulation on exposed surfaces of boilers and breechings, tanks,
hot or cold pipes and steam generators.
This
is skilled work at the full performance level, under the general supervision of
the Plumbing and Heating Maintenance Foreman II. Detailed instructions as to
the manner of performing each step is seldom given, but work is checked on
completion for satisfactory performance. This class is distinguished from the
Insulation Mechanic I class by the more difficult mechanical problems and the
supervision exercised over various projects and personnel.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Supervises various projects;
Receives work orders from Plumbing and Heating
Maintenance Foreman II and reviews work requests, sets up work in chronological
order, priorities are given to insulation jobs which conserve energy or reduce
condensation leaks;
Initiates procurement of materials when
necessary to maintain stock on truck; checks truck stock to assure that sufficient
materials are available to accomplish the assigned tasks;
Surveys job to determine extent of new work or
needed repairs; prepares surfaces for new work or removes old damaged
insulation to a point where replacement work can begin; installs anchors for
work on vertical or horizontal flat surfaces;
Insulates exposed hot water, chilled water,
steam and return and pump discharge piping with wrapped on or preformed
fiberglass insulation, assuring that all exposed covering is jacketed with
extra canvas covering pasted on with adhesive; insulates hot piping in crawl
space with same material covered with roofing felt jacket coated and sealed
with black asphalt;
Insulates valves and fitting with wrapped
fiberglass or pre-molded insulation fitting and secures with special tape; may
use layers of hard finished asbestos cement equal to thickness of adjacent pipe
insulation troweled to a smooth even finish and jacketed with canvas pasted on
with an adhesive; installs half sleeve steel covering between insulation and
hangers;
Insulates converters, oil heaters, oil lines,
chillers, expansion tanks and air separators using appropriate materials and
method;
Insulates chilled and hot water pumps, boiler
breeching and boilers with insulation boards or block and covered with
appropriate canvas, insulation cement or wire netting as requires; provides
removable sections for lubrication and name plates;
Directs work of Insulation Mechanic I or Trades
Helper when task requires additional manpower; reports to school office at the
beginning of the job and when work is completed for work order signature;
May be required to instruct and inspect the
work of other employees;
May be required to adjust work hours to accommodate
building occupants;
Deemed as essential personnel and may be
required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of
the department; and
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Five (5) years of experience in the
insulation industry;
Thorough knowledge of the terminology,
tools, materials, practices and safety regulations of the insulation trade;
Ability to work with knives, cutters,
trowels and other hand tools;
Ability to read and work with
blueprints;
Ability to supervise the work of others;
and
Remains aware of changes in the state of
the art new and more efficient materials or techniques of installation.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a high school diploma or GED required with
acceptable grades in Mathematics, Science, Shop and Blueprint Reading.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with
driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more
than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations
occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees
work of Insulation Mechanic I, Apprentices and Trades Helpers.
