POSITION SUMMARY:
The
International Student Specialist is responsible for the management,
implementation, coordination, and evaluation of services provided by the
International Student Counseling Office (ISCO). Under the direction of the Instructional
Supervisor of School Counseling, the International Student Specialist will be
responsible for providing enrollments and follow-up services for all
international students (PreK-12).
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Leads
the ISCO team of ten month counselors, supports staff and coordinates the
intake and outreach counseling programs;
Enrolls
all international students (PreK-12);
Provides
school counseling services for international students and their parents;
Acts
as a liaison with school system;
Processes
and reviews U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service documents, foreign
transcripts and other documents needed for the enrollment process;
Evaluates
foreign transcripts for students educated overseas;
Provides
guidance and professional development regarding cross cultural communication
and skill development;
Maintains
working relationship and collaborates with English Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL) testing and instructional teams;
Maintains
close communication with international student advisors at the university
and/or college level, social service agencies, refugee agencies, and foreign
exchange student program representatives;
Supports
Pupil Accounting and School Boundaries in informal kinship care and tuition waiverrequests;
Keeps
accurate statistics on foreign student enrollment for federal, state, and local
reporting purposes;
Coordinates
the acceptance, registration, and placement of all foreign exchange students;
and
Serves
as member of the School Counseling Leadership Team.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Proficiency
in a second language preferred;
Strong
human relation skills, especially in multicultural areas;
Strong
oral, written and cross-cultural communication skills;
Broad
knowledge of and sensitivity to international student characteristics and
needs;
Knowledge
and basic skills of computer usage (including FileMaker Pro, Excel, PowerPoint,
Word, etc.);
Strong
leadership and managerial skills; and
Experience
working with English Language Learners and immigrant students in an educational
setting.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
Master’s degree and five (5) years of school-based counseling; in-service
training experience.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Advanced
Professional Certificate in Counseling and Admin I Certification preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
