POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Network Engineer II-LAN or WAN will be responsible for assisting the Office of Network Operations in the design, installation, maintenance and repair of all computer networks, computer related hardware and electronics in schools and offices. Work also includes providing critical local area network and wide area network technical support to all school system networks. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed in terms of accomplishment of objectives. Assignments are received through conferences, written, instructions/requests affording latitude in independent judgment and action in the performance of duties.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Assign daily responsibilities to IT-Technicians and Interns based on needs of Manager, Engineers and service calls to schools.      

Provide technical assistance to Engineers with regard to configuration and maintenance of routers, servers and switches.

Develop procedures that support the effective use of computers by students, teachers and other system staff.

Research, evaluate and test new technologies for use and implementation on WAN/LAN.

Collaborate with Manager and Systems Architect with WAN/LAN issues and projects.

Provide engineering expertise and technical assistance to PGCPS staff with projects to be implemented on WAN/LAN

Designing, installing, maintenance and repair of computer networks and related equipment;

Assisting in installation and implementation of various types of servers into a network infrastructure;

Evaluating computers, network components and software;

Developing procedures that support the effective use of computers by students, teachers, and all other system staff;

Selecting, installing, testing, and maintenance of software on computer networks;

Assisting all school system personnel in the appropriate use of computer networks;

Develop supporting documentation for network procedures

Provide support and assistance to the Network Engineers as needed

Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Considerable knowledge and experience in Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2003 Server;

Extensive knowledge with Ethernet networks;

Knowledge and experience with Local Area Network installation and repair;

Knowledge and experience in the configuration of routers and switches;

Knowledge and experience with TCP/IP and Frame Relay;

Knowledge and experience with Category 5(e) data communications design standards;

Knowledge and experience with DOS and Macintosh operating systems;

Knowledge and experience with UNIX;

Knowledge and experience in the configuration of file servers;

Ability to maintain and troubleshoot LAN and WAN connectivity;

Demonstrated oral and written communication skills; and

Excellent human relation skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Information Sciences with at least five (5) years’ experience preferred; or any combination of applicable education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position. 


 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and/or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) preferred. 


 

 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Supervision of IT Technicians and IT Interns.
