POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the general supervision, performs lead supervisory and skilled work in rough and finish carpentry and associated trades. This is lead supervisory work involving participating in and assigning, directing and inspecting the efforts of crews composed of Carpenter II(s), Carpenter I(s), and Trades Helpers engaged in carpentry and associated skills. Areas of work and standards to be met are the overall responsibility of the Building Maintenance Foreman II, however, incumbent must use independent judgment in assigning, scheduling, estimating, inspecting and participating in the work of the carpentry and cabinetry trades and related trades such as plastering, floor tiling, locksmith and roofing. Assignments are usually received in written form and the work is subject to review for compliance with instructions and requests. This class differs from Carpenter II by the wider scope of supervisory responsibility and administrative tasks to be accomplished.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Supervises work crews composed of Carpenter II(s), Carpenter I(s) and Trades Helpers in the making and/or repairing of cabinets, desks, window frames, sashes, tables, office furniture, locks, ceilings, screens, floors, floor coverings, doors; installs partitions, covering with dry wall and paneling;

Operates woodworking machinery; may perform custom cabinetry work in the completion of such items as cabinets, furniture, shelving, displays, frames and plaques. Maintains time and work order records; prepares reports as required. Assigns crews in response to emergency situations resulting from vandalism, fires, flooding or storms; checks on hazardous conditions and assists in enforcing safety rules and regulations;

Acts for Building Maintenance Foreman II in his absence; performs or assists in performing the more difficult or skilled tasks, trains and instructs subordinates; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Thorough knowledge of standard, equipment and practices used in carpentry trades;

Knowledge of the hazards and the necessary safety precautions of carpentry projects;

Ability to assign work, supervise and carry job through to completion;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and

Must be in good physical condition.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of a high school diploma, GED or vocational course preferred with some experience at the level of Carpenter II; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's license with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Supervises work crews composed of Carpenters II, Carpenters I and Trades Helpers.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
