POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the direction of professional personnel, and in accordance with established policies, performs duties entailing the application of library techniques and procedures to a variety of library operations. These include the performance of research to ascertain the availability of data in general and special areas, the compiling of bibliographies, the coordinating of recommendations for purchases and the purchasing of new materials. Also, included are the administrative details involved in the operation of a media center.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Performs Para-professional library work in providing reference service to the administrative and instructional personnel;

Performs work for administrative and instructional staff such as researching information in general or special areas and compiling bibliographies;

Locates, charges out and packages materials for schools;

Coordinates and assists in evaluation of new books, journals, pamphlets and related materials after scanning new material and taking into consideration recommendations of professional personnel;

Recommends purchase of material;

Inventories collection yearly and notes its continued relevance;

Receives new materials, books, etc., and catalogues all books and related materials for the professional collection;

Serves in reading resources rooms for administrative and instructional staff;

Performs related administrative and accounting services for a center; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Good knowledge of standard library procedures and practices;

Good knowledge of library reference materials and sources;

Good knowledge of and interest in literature and instructional materials;

Ability to perform effective library reference reader advisory and other professional library work;

Familiarity with the typewriter;

Ability to get along well with others;

Ability to keep records and make reports;

Willingness to learn library techniques;

Aptitude for library work; and

Must be in good physical condition.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Some Para-professional library experience and completion of a standard high school course, supplemented by two years of college with courses in education or library work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
