POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the general supervision of the Coordinating Supervisor, the incumbent performs library work in providing reference and research services to administrative and instructional personnel. Duties and responsibilities include entailing the application of library knowledge, techniques and procedures to a variety of library operations, i.e., providing research to ascertain the availability of data in general and special areas, the compiling of bibliographies, the coordination of recommendations for purchases and the selection and purchasing of new materials. Work also includes the administrative details involved in the operation of the curriculum library.    

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Assists administrators, staff specialists, teachers, and other patrons with researching for information requested and selecting pertinent information and/or compiling bibliographies; contacts other educational institutions to obtain additional reference material when necessary;

Reviews books and journals to evaluate and select new or updated material; purchases books, journals, pamphlets, microfilm, microfiche, and related materials giving appropriate consideration to the recommendations of the administrative or instructional staff; or request, notifies patrons about current articles in their specific fields of interest;

Receives and checks catalogs, classifies, cross references, and shelves new acquisitions;

Locates, charges out, packages and forwards material upon request; unpacks, discharges and shelves material returned;

Inventories the collection yearly; evaluates dated material and discards that which is not valuable to the collection;

Performs or supervises the performance of incidental clerical and typing activities such as filing, maintaining records of circulation, sending out overdue notices, etc.; operates, cleans and adjusts copy machine, microfilm and microfiche reader-printers;

Responds to phone calls or e-mail requests; and

Performs related work as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Good knowledge of standard library procedures and practices;

Good knowledge of educational reference materials;

Ability to perform effective reference reader advisory services;

Ability to keep records and make reports;

Willingness to keep abreast of developments in the field;

Knowledge of computer operations, ability to lift and move books, audio-visual equipment, and other equipment;

Ability to type at the required rate of speed;

Ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously;

Ability to work under time constraints; and

Good oral and written communication skills

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

A.A. degree in the field of educational library work or a related field with considerable library experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
