POSITION SUMMARY:
Sorts,
weighs, stamps, seals, and delivers U.S. and departmental mail; does related
work as required. Work in this class
involves the receipt, processing, and delivery of U.S. and departmental mail.
It includes prolonged standing, considerable walking, handling of bulky and/or
moderately heavy packages, and motor vehicle operation. Some judgment is
required on interpretation of applicable regulations and policies. Work is
performed under general supervision, and in accordance with established
instructions and work methods.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Sorts and groups incoming U.S. and departmental
mail and packages for delivery;
Separates departmental mail from outgoing mail
and sorts it for distribution;
As required, runs outgoing U.S. mail through
mailing machines which seals flaps, stamps envelopes and totals number of
pieces processed;
Weighs mail and affixes required postage; wraps
and labels packages; maintains daily records of postage charges;
Picks up and delivers mail and packages on a
scheduled basis at the Central Office;
Answers telephone and provides routine
information about or takes message concerning mail, mail pick-ups and
deliveries;
Makes special pick-ups and deliveries;
Drives motor vehicles in making pick-ups and
deliveries within and outside the Central Office;
Loads mail on trucks; and
Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Basic understanding of United States
Postal Service (USPS) code, practices, policy and pricing;
Ability to learn assigned clerical, mail
processing and mail handling tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines
and schedules, and to develop some skill in the operation of postal equipment;
Ability to understand and follow oral
and written instructions;
Ability to make simple arithmetical
computations with accuracy;
Ability to obtain signatures, scan and
track packages;
Ability to write legibly;
Ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships; and
Ability to lift moderately heavy
articles, and to do considerable standing and walking.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or equivalent required, with some
experience in performing general clerical or mail room work.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of an appropriate and valid Maryland motor Vehicle Operator’s License with
driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more
than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations
occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. (See Prince George’s
County Public Schools Bulletin A-26-85, dated October 8, 1984.)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs.
