POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Mason II performs supervisory and skilled work in maintaining masonry structures at all schools and grounds.  The employee in this class performs skilled work at the crew foreman level.  Assignments are received from and the work is performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor - Maintenance.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Performs repairs to masonry walls;

Removes and replaces rotted wood lath with sheet metal and rock lath;

Places and finishes plaster;

Follows engineer's rough hand sketch in laying cinderblocks, using plumb line to see that work is perpendicular;

Lays brick to install retaining walls and to build tool sheds;

Points up cracks and replaces glass blocks and tile;

Repairs ceramic tile flows and walls; and

Works as a Carpenter when not working as a Mason.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and practices of the mason trade;

Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; skill in the care and use of tools and equipment of the Mason Trade;

Ability to plan, layout and perform difficulty masonry work;

Ability to work from rough sketches with accurate dimensions;

Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; and

Good physical condition.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of the ninth (9th) grade or vocational training courses supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade; considerable experience as a Journeyman Mason, some of which shall have been at the level of Mason I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License with driving record indicating five (5) o fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of a traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George's County Public Schools' in A-26-85 dated October 8, 1984).


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Supervises the work of crews composed of Painter II, Painters I, and Trades Helpers.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
