POSITION SUMMARY:
Under
the direction of the Director of Technology Operations, the Network Engineer II
will be responsible for the design, installation, maintenance and repair of all
computer networks, computer related hardware and electronics in schools and
offices. In addition, the incumbent supports design, selection and
implementation of new technologies and platforms covering wired and wireless
LAN access infrastructure, network performance monitoring & diagnostics,
data center technologies including virtualization, cloud computing and
hyper-convergence.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Designing, installing, maintenance
and repair of computer networks, wired and wireless and related equipment;
Installing and maintaining long-haul optical
networking equipment spanning multiple locations;
Provide
engineering expertise and technical assistance to PGCPS IT staff with projects
to be implemented on WAN/LAN/WLAN;
Assist in installation, configuration
and implementation of various types of servers into a network infrastructure;
Network performance monitoring and
diagnostics;
Monitor
and maintain VMware environment;
Selecting, installing, testing and
maintenance of software and network components on the district network;
Assist in design/development,
evaluation/selection and implementation of new technologies in the areas of
wired and wireless LAN access infrastructure;
Assist in evaluation, selection and
integration of cloud-based solutions (IaaS, PaaS and Saas); and
Represent Prince George’s County
Public Schools (PGCPS) IT network engineering LAN/WAN technical support and
input at Prince George’s County Intergovernmental
Network (I-NET), Prince George’s County Inter-County Broadband Network (ICBN)
technical meetings and other organizations and agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Considerable knowledge and experience in Windows 7 to
present day releases of Windows desktop operating systems;
Considerable
knowledge and experience in Windows server software from Windows 2008 to
present release versions of Windows server operating systems and Microsoft
applications;
Considerable
knowledge in Windows Active Directory administration and troubleshooting;
Extensive
knowledge with Ethernet networks;
Knowledge and
experience with Local Area Networks
installation, configuration, maintenance and repair;
Experience with common-carrier data networks required;
Knowledge and
experience in the configuration of routers and a large quantity of switches;
Knowledge and
experience with Category 5e, 6, 6a, IEEE 802.11 data communications design standards
and multi-mode/single mode fiber optics;
Knowledge and
experience with DOS, Powershell, and Macintosh operating systems;
Knowledge and
experience with UNIX & Linux variants;
Knowledge and
experience in the configuration of file servers;
Ability to
maintain and troubleshoot LAN and WAN connectivity and applications;
Able to
support multiple vendor networks;
Demonstrated
oral and written communication skills; and
Excellent
inter-personal skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited
college or university with major work in Computer Science, Electrical
Engineering or Information Sciences with at least seven (7) years’ experience
preferred; familiarity with large scale
computerized systems; or any equivalent combinations of experience and training
which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and/or Cisco Certified
Network Associate (CCNA), Aruba Certified Mobility Associate (ACMA), Aruba
Certified Mobility Professional (ACMP), Aruba Certified ClearPass Professional
(ACCP), Brocade Certified Network Engineer (BCNE), Brocade Certified Network
Professional (BCNP).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
