POSITION SUMMARY:
The Oil Burner Mechanic
I performs skilled work in the adjusting and servicing of
temperature controls and in the maintenance and repair of oil burners and
related heating equipment in the county schools. This is skilled work at the
crew level, involving specialized mechanical work and requires an advanced
knowledge of heating equipment and systems.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Oil Burner Mechanic
II, Lead and/or Shop Master Foreman, who lay out assignments. Detailed
instructions on performing each step are seldom given. Work is checked based on
completion for satisfactory performance.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Checks, repairs, maintains and adjusts
oil/gas burners and associated equipment;
Replaces belts on burners, induced draft
fans and oil pumps;
Replaces bearings, packing and seals;
Realigns fan blades on induced draft
fan;
Aligns shafts on oil pumps, and replaces
faulty or worn parts;
Cleans and services burners and ignition
assemblies; adjusts oil and air ratio;
Checks oil burner controls, traces and
finds shorts, checks fuses and line starters, checks connections, rewires
faulty wiring on new controls, checks and repairs electrical motors;
Sets, repairs and replaces stems and
other parts of air stream thermostat; calibrates and repairs room thermostats;
checks unit heaters and pneumatic valves for leakage and proper operating
efficiency; inspects adjusts and makes minor repairs to air compressors;
During the summer season, assists in the
flushing, cleaning and test firing of all boilers; assists in repairs to
fireboxes of heating plants, removing old bricks and installing new refactor
materials; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Thorough knowledge terminology, tools,
materials, and practices of the oil burner and associated trades;
Skilled in the performance of heating
tasks;
Ability to work from blueprints;
Ability to plan and oversee the work of
others;
Mechanical aptitude;
Knowledge of the hazards and necessary
safety precautions; and
Good physical condition.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduate supplemented by completion of a
recognized apprenticeship or trade school and some experience in the trade,
some of which shall have been at the level of a trades helper or journeyman.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession
of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with
driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more
than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations
occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George’s County Public Schools’
Bulleting A026-85 dated October 8, 1984).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees
and provides guidance to Trades Helpers and Apprentices.

While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
