POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Outdoor Education Specialist works with PGCPS students and teachers to increase their knowledge and make informed decisions that create and maintain an optimal relationship between themselves and the environment. The specialist will work with students, teachers and partners to increase achievement through modeling, training and support.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Facilitating and coordinating the on-site residential program at the Outdoor Education Center; (Requires a minimum of one overnight stay per week at the Outdoor Center);

Visiting schools scheduled for field studies at the William S. Schmidt Outdoor Education Center to assist in organizing and planning and the instructional program;

Assisting schools with the implementation of their on-site instructional program;

Monitoring and maintaining the operation, apparatus and facilities of the William S. Schmidt Outdoor Education Center;

Assisting the Supervisor of Environmental Education with planning, developing and infusing the Prince George's County Board of Education and the Maryland State Department of Education Environmental Education Bylaw as explained in the Annotated Code of Maryland paragraph 13AQ.04.17.01.04;

Conducting and assisting with special projects and activities associated with Environmental Education and the William S. Schmidt Outdoor Education Center programs;

Assessing school and classroom needs as relates to the Environmental Education Program and student achievement;

Procuring and allocating resources;

Assisting teachers and staff in providing a learning environment that supports the Prince George's County Public Schools and Maryland State curricula;

Assisting and developing a comprehensive plan for PGCPS that address the state graduation requirements of Environmental Literacy; and

Performs related work as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Demonstrates superior knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to best practices in science program implementation and development;

Thorough knowledge of state standards, benchmarks, and alternative modes of assessment;

Knowledge of the use of the MSDE Environmental Literacy Standards;

Knowledge of current trends in science education, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities and literacy.

Ability to relate positively with teachers, central office personnel and the general public;

Experience in operating standard office equipment and office software including database, spreadsheet, web page development, etc.;

Ability to interact effectively with teachers and parents;

Communicate effectively both in written and oral form with diverse groups;

Excellent written communication;

Maintains accurate financial and attendance records; and

Possesses superior public speaking abilities.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree required, course work or experience in environmental education, outdoor education preferred; Master's Degree preferred; minimum of four (4) years of successful teaching experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.        

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Advanced Professional Certificate in Elementary Education, Secondary Science or a related field.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
  The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Some of the physical demands include: Ability to carry 30 lbs over a considerable distance; Ability to walk considerable distances during the day and evening; and Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
