POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor - Maintenance, the Painter I performs skilled work in the interior and exterior painting buildings and offices and in finishing furniture and fixtures.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Preparing and painting surfaces of walls, floors, doors, ceilings and furniture;

Making minor plastering repairs to walls and ceilings;

Mixing materials used such as paints, stains, varnishes, enamels and lacquers;

Placing lines on athletic fields, tracks and parking lots; 

Repairing and cleaning spraying equipment; 

Supervising the work of trades helper; and

Performing related work as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Good knowledge of the practices and procedures of the painting trade;  

Good knowledge of the methods of preparing materials and surfaces for painting;

Ability to rig and work from scaffolds;

Dependability; and

Good physical condition.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of high school, standard vocational school course(s), GED or recognized apprenticeship in the trade; with considerable experience in the painting trade, some of which have been at the level of Painter I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's license at the time of appointment; driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, which no more than three (3) shall have accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince Georges County Public Schools' Bulletin P-1-88 dated July 21, 1987).


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Supervising the work of Trades Helper.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
