POSITION SUMMARY:


  Performs supervisory and skilled work in the painting of building interiors and exteriors and in refinishing furniture and fixtures. This is skilled and supervisory work in the painting of school buildings, fixtures and equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising Journeyman Painter I(s) in the painting of interiors and exteriors of buildings involving all types of rough and finished surfaces, equipment and furnishings. Work involves independent judgment to assigning duties and selecting painting methods, colors and stains to meet job requirements. Assignments are received orally and in written form from the Building Maintenance Foreman and the work are subject to review for compliance with instructions and requests.  Supervision is often exercised over the work of Trades Helpers and Painter I(s). Supervision of Painter I(s) is the major factor which distinguished this class from the class of Painter I.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Plans and supervises the work of Journeyman Painters I, painting interiors and exteriors of buildings and all types of rough and finished surfaces, equipment and furnishings;

Supervises the preparation of surfaces for painting, the erection of scaffolding and ladders to insure that safety standards are observed and the painting of a variety of interior and exterior surfaces;

Supervises the finishing and refinishing of equipment, wooden floors, and cabinetry;

Measures and paints or lays lines in parking lots and athletic fields;

Estimates time and material required for specific assignments and keeps records of labor and material costs; and

Performs related work as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, codes, standards, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting trade;

Good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work;

Ability to plan and supervise the work of Journeyman Painters including the placing of ladders and erection of scaffolds;

Ability to made accurate time and material estimates and to keep records pertaining to the work;

Willingness to work day or evening hours as required; and

Must be in good physical condition.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Completion of high school, standard vocational school course(s), GED or recognized apprenticeship in the trade; with considerable experience in the painting trade, some of which shall have been at the level of Painter I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Incumbent is responsible for overseeing crews of Trades Helpers and Journeymen.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
