POSITION SUMMARY:


The Paralegal - General Liability assists attorneys with legal research, draft reports and pleadings, and performs specialized and confidential support duties to aid the legal counsel with legal matters related to General Liability; develops data and prepares pleadings, reports, or memoranda related to problems assigned to study; investigates facts and laws of a case to determine causes of action; prepares fact analyses; and assembles complicated packages of documents and other materials for attorneys.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Assist in drafting discovery requests, responses to discovery, and Notices of Service of Discovery;

Assist with trial preparation;

Assist in drafting copy of Motion to Compel (or for Sanctions) regarding Discovery Responses;

Assist in electronic filing through PACER, DC Superior Court, U.S. District Court of MD & DC and U.S. Court of Appeals Fourth Circuit;

Assist in maintenance of Case Notebook and other case management software;

Obtain Verification of Answers to Interrogatories;

Identify deficiencies in discovery responses;

Schedule and confirm depositions;

Draft deposition notices/confirm receipt of notices from opc;

Receive and handle payment of invoices from court reporting services;

Request and Schedule Independent Medical Examinations;

Prepare retainer agreements for designated experts;

Research rules of civil procedure, statutes and case law for pleadings;

Contacting clerk of courts and judge’s chambers regarding status of pending motions;

Scan all incoming mail;

Mail and file motions in Prince Georges County Circuit Court, District Court, and U.S. District Court of Maryland;

Calendar all scheduled matters in litigation (including depositions and filing deadlines);

Keeps attorney’s calendars accurate and up-to-date; and

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Ability to evaluate case referrals from third party administrator;

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite;

Knowledge of all phases of litigation;

Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Excellent organizational skills and attention to details;

Excellent judgment skills;

Ability to work independently;

Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills;

Ability to manage high-volume practice and prioritize responsibilities;

Ability to review, organize, and summarize medical records;

Ability to work with and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;

Ability to produce high-quality work products; and

Ability to maintain complex calendar and efficiently update.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with major work in business administration, public administration, or accounting required; minimum of 2 years of paralegal experience in Workers Compensation; considerable experience in progressively responsible administrative work, including supervisory or public accounting experience; some experience or familiarity with large scale computerized accounting systems; or any equivalent combinations of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
