POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Pest Controller performs lead supervisory and skilled work in the control an extermination of rodents and insects.  This position is responsible for safeguarding the health of students, faculty and staff of Prince George's County Public Schools through the informed use of appropriate pest control measures in compliance with federal and state laws.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Maintaining a regular schedule of field visits to schools and offices buildings to control and exterminate flies, ants, mice, rats, and other rodents and insects;

Using liquid sprays, powders pellets, and other pest control materials;

Checking for termites and notifying supervisor of the presence of these pest;

Exercising meticulous care in the mixture and use of various liquid sprays, powders, pellets, and other pest control materials;

Responding to special calls for pest control treatment and making follow-up visits as needed;

Spraying for bees, wasps and stinging insects during the seasonal months;

Maintaining work order records;

Preparing reports for submission to the Director of time spent and materials used to complete schedule or special assignments; and

Submitting request for reorder of supplies, etc.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Thorough knowledge of practices, equipment and chemical substances used in pest extermination;

Knowledge of the hazards and the necessary safety precautions and equipment required of extermination projects;

Ability to assign work, and carry a job through completion;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Good physical condition required; and

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's license at the time of appointment; driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, which no more than three (3) shall have accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince Georges County Public Schools' Bulletin P-1-88 dated July 21, 1987). 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High School diploma or GED.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Maryland State Department of Agriculture Certification preferred with at least one (1) year of experience as a pest control serviceman.


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and use fingers, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:


Employees in this class are considered emergency personnel and therefore are expected to have residential telephone service and personal transportation.
