POSITION SUMMARY:


  The planetarium Operator is responsible for the overall operation, maintenance, and development of the planetarium and its programs of instruction.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Develops and facilitates educational programs for the planetarium;

Troubleshoot, maintain, and evaluate planetarium  media systems;

Performs routine evaluation and maintenance of the planetarium theater (seats, carpet, dome, etc.);

Maintains the production studio to ensure audio/video workstations and associated equipment are in good working order;

Maintains the darkroom/photography studio to ensure equipment is in good working order;

Interacts with vendors for repairs, upgrades, maintenance, visits, etc.;

Develops slides, videotapes, and other special visual effects for use in planetarium educational programs;

Develops and promotes planetarium programs appropriate for the general public;

Advises the Supervisor on use of funds generated by planetarium programming;

Develops partnerships with Institutes of Higher Learning, Governmental agencies and businesses;

Trains personnel to operate the planetarium equipment and teach planetarium programs; and

Participates in professional development opportunities including workshops and regional/international planetarium conferences.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Knowledge of astronomy;

Ability to work some evenings and weekends;

Knowledge of SPICE and Hercules programming recommended;

Relates positively with center staff;

Relates positively with the general public;

Interacts effectively with teachers and parents;

Maintains accurate financial and attendance records;

Possesses supervisor public speaking abilities; and

Demonstrates superior knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to planetarium program implementation and development.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Earth Science related field.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


 

Holds or eligible for valid Maryland Teaching Certificate.


 

 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Training of other staff members on the operation of the planetarium.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
