POSITION SUMMARY:


  The Press Operator I sets up, operates, and  performs maintenance and minor repairs on various types of printing, duplicating, copying, bindery and related equipment. The incumbent is primarily responsible for operating any automated duplicating or offset press up to "14 x 20" sheet size range to produce work of ordinary quality such as single color and multicolor line copy, halftones, solids of light coverage, carbonless forms and repetitive type work. Characteristically work involves normal registration at an easy degree of difficulty. Work also includes performing basic Letter press work. Assignments are carried out in accordance with established methods, techniques and procedures. Work is performed under close supervision of the Production Control Expeditor and may be spot checked in progress, for compliance to specifications or difficult machine problems that require deviation from the standard work practices.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Sets-up, makes ready and operates any automated duplicating system or offset press up to the "14 x 20" sheet size range;

Performs all operators' adjustments and routine preventive maintenance on equipment as prescribed and/or needed as designated for this particular grade level;

Pays special attention to positioning of image, registration and consistent color balance and other details that will insure production of "ordinary" quality work;

Makes metal and other types of plates as required;

Continuously monitors and makes necessary adjustments to equipment to insure conformance to given job specifications in order to minimize waste and spoilage;

Accurately records all time and materials incident to the various operations performed in the production of each job;

Maintains the minimum Industry and Printing Services production and quality standards;

Performs routine operations necessary to complete requests for services in accordance to given instructions and/or job specifications;

Operates and utilizes bindery equipment to produce various routine binding and finishing operations and performs material handling tasks as required;

May assist in performing routine camera and stripping operations;

Under supervision, may assist or be trained in the operation of any other Press Room or Bindery equipment of a more complex nature;

Operates electronic copies and high speed Digital Duplicators as required;

May assist in training, and provides guidance to Print Shop helpers or other employees of same or lower grade level;

Performs routine clerical tasks incident to the work;

Maintains work area to be clean, orderly, and hazard free; Adheres to and follows all safety regulations as established for the department; and

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Working knowledge of the operation, adjustment and operators' preventive maintenance of automated duplicating systems and offset duplicators in the "14 x20" sheet size range;

Working knowledge in the use of electronic plate makers and direct image processors;

Working knowledge in the preparation and use of chemicals, inks and other supplies utilized in the printing field;

Ability to operate equipment so as to achieve of ordinary quality and meet the prescribed level of production;

Some knowledge of camera, stripping and platemaking operations;

Some knowledge of letter press operations;

Some knowledge of Bindery I level operations;

Ability to learn, within a reasonable amount of time, the set-up, operation, operators' preventive maintenance of any new or more complex equipment which is designated to be within the employees particular classification and grade level;

Ability to understand and follow instructions by means of written or other forms of communication;

Ability to make arithmetical computations and must also be familiar with the other shop mathematics and units of measure to understand dimensional requirements contained in work orders;

Ability to perform assigned clerical tasks and to adhere to prescribed routine;

Ability to work under pressure and meet short term deadlines;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers; and

Ability to continually stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach and sufficient physical strength to permit the handling of supplies and equipment used.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High school graduate with a minimum of (2000 hours) in the operation of offset automatic duplicators and presses up to "14 x 20" sheet size range producing work of ordinary quality; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


None Required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

No direct supervisory responsibilities. May assist in providing training and guidance to other lower grade level employees such as Print Shop Helpers.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to spend prolonged periods of time standing during the operation of binding equipment while performing bindery operations. Employees in this class continually lift, carry, or otherwise handle printed material and paper stock weighing up to 40 lbs. and, occasionally, items or materials weighing up to 80 lbs. without the help of any mechanical devices, and up to 2,000 lbs. when utilizing mechanical devices such as fork-lifts or pallet-jacks. There is frequent stooping, bending, and reaching to make machine adjustments, remove misrouted materials and other operational activities. In most instances the employee is required to maintain a work pace consistent with the speed of operating machinery and/or the needs of the other workers.

  The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  The employee is exposed to low frequency noise generated by machine operations and vibrations during production periods. The operator is exposed to skin irritations and unpleasant odors/fumes from inks, solvents, acids, and other chemicals normally associated with pressroom operations, as well as being exposed to hazards from moving parts on equipment and minor cuts from paper materials.
