POSITION SUMMARY:
In Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), the Principal of
Alternative High School upholds and drives our shared core values and
epitomizes PGCPS pride. The Principal of Alternative High School is responsible
for operating the instructional program, school governance, operational
processes and providing educational leadership for the staff, students, and
community. This is an exciting

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Personalizes learning experiences and support for non-traditional and/or
credit deficient students assigned to the school to meet their educational and
behavioral needs;
Assesses and meets the social/emotional needs of students with
identified behavior concerns through effective use of Restorative approaches,
Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports (PBIS), character education, and
trauma informed practices;
Utilizes online educational resources to create individualized learning
plans for students to aid in credit recovery and accelerating the academic
process;
Develops systems of support to ensure a successful entry and transition
back to the student’s base school through active monitoring and outreach to
various stakeholders;
Provides an equitable approach to access engaging and rigorous
curriculum to support post-secondary options;
Establishes community partnerships to provide a network of support for
students;
Utilizes research based interventions to meet the needs of
non-traditional and/or credit-deficient students;
Develops and sustains a school environment aligned to the Exemplary Practices Standards of Quality and
Program Evaluation of the National Alternative Education Association;
Develops, articulates and implements a vision of learning that is shared
and supported by the school community;
Provides instructional leadership for the alignment of curriculum,
instruction and assessment through the purposeful observation and evaluation of
teachers;
Develops an approach to improve and maintain a positive culture for
learning that capitalizes on multiple aspects of cultural diversity to meet the
needs of all students and staff;
Builds professional learning communities to nurture and sustain a school
culture and instructional program conducive to accelerated student achievement;
Acts ethically and according to professional norms to promote each
student’s academic success and well-being;
Ensures efficient management of school operations and resources for a
safe and effective learning environment in order to promote student’s academic
success and well-being;
Collaborates with families and community members, maintains a presence
in the community to understand its strengths and needs, develops productive
relationships, and engages its resources for the school;
Seeks and engages in professional activities that foster leadership
development; building the capacity of the Assistant Principal and other
aspiring leaders;
Fosters innovative thinkers who can help achieve the vision and mission
of Prince George’s County Public Schools;
Demonstrates integrity, fairness, mutual respect, and high ethical
standards; works cooperatively and interacts positively with students, staff
and community exercising courtesy and discretion; serves as a role model for
staff and students; and
Complies with all Board of Education Policies, Administrative Procedures
and operating procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Ability to create a team that works
collaboratively and promotes high expectations for all students;
Knowledge and experience implementing curriculum
and school operations;
Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills and
the ability to work effectively with diverse populations; and
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Doctorate preferred; Master’s degree in Supervision and Administration,
Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or related field from an accredited
college or university required; previous successful experience as a school-based
administrator, (or other comparable leadership experience). Comparable leadership experience includes but
is not limited to: school Dean, or Assistant Principal equivalent position;
district or central office level Supervisor, Director or Manager.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate,
Administrator II Certification required..
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises all school-based staff.
