POSITION SUMMARY:


  Under the direction of the Print Shop Manager the incumbent plans, schedules, routes, expedites, assigns, follows up all jobs, in pursuit of higher operating efficiency, and customer satisfaction by making optimum use of materials, manpower and equipment available. The duties of an employee in this class involves the receipt of requisitions for services, interpreting customer requests, planning, giving instructions, assigning jobs to each employee, coordinating flow of work during production, and review of work while in progress. Employee may assist in providing cost estimates. The incumbent may perform other production and equipment operations tasks relevant to the Print Shop as required. Work assignments are carried out independently in accordance with established methods, techniques, and procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Print Shop Manager.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Receives and logs requisitions for services, inputs and updates information on computer database;

Prepares job jackets with clear, complete and accurate specifications for each segment of production involved; assigns priorities;

Assigns personnel to specific assignments, plans, routes and schedules requisitions according to availability and capability of equipment, personnel, size, complexity of job, and desired quality of finished product, as well as estimated delivery time;

Supervises and expedites control over production, keeps Manager advised of any unusual circumstances concerning production;

Maintains production schedule computerized system, showing accurate information for current and projected workload;

Closes out requisitions and extracts production data for daily and monthly summaries;

Insures all staff is correctly using Print Shop Operating System. Trains staff when necessary, installs and/or monitors updates to Operating System when required;

Responsible for quality control, examines all jobs for defects such as imperfect binding, poor copy quality, loose, torn or uneven pages, etc.;

Has the authority and responsibility to halt production in any manufacturing area, when specifications and quality requirements are not being met;

Analyzes all spoiled work and/or complaints, determines causes, records the incidents and recommends to Manager action to control and eliminate sub-standard work;

Recommends production quotas and standards, both short and long term for approval by Manager;

Oversees maintenance of all production records, plates and job jackets;

Assigns detailed daily task related to completion of each printing request;

Oversees and maintains inventory control on all supplies used in Print Shop;

May initiate the requisition of standard supplies necessary for the manufacturing cycle, and upon approval by Manager will order such supplies directly;

Plans and schedules equipment preventive maintenance and maintains equipment service log records;

Writes and issues Request for Quotes to outside vendors, assigns vendor and generates Oracle Requisition for outsourced printing; and

In addition to Manager, Print Shop Foreman will perform job costing and job estimating.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Considerable knowledge and understanding of print shop operation and procedures;

Thorough knowledge of capabilities of print shop equipment and personnel;

Thorough knowledge and ability in sequential scheduling, job planning and timing for production requirements;

Ability to determine the most practical and economic means of fulfilling customers requirements;

Ability to interpret oral instructions into clear written instructions used as work orders;

Ability to coordinate and supervise employees engaged in the various production areas simultaneously schedules, routes, expedites, assigns and follows up on all work requisitions;

Ability to maintain records and generate reports;

Ability to make complex arithmetical computations;

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with customers and print shop personnel; and

Ability to work under pressure situations and meet short deadlines.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

Previous experience, a minimum of five (5) years (10,000 hours), in the Offset and Digital printing field, sufficient to the extent that it enables the incumbent to provide guidance to employees engaged in the production of highly skilled and technical print shop operations. Progressive experience in the trade, to include one to three years of leadership experience; completion of a standard high school or equivalent, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Skilled at problem solving with all shop equipment and special layouts, as well as insuring all equipment is operational.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

The Print Shop Foreman may provide assistance in the supervision of offset production employees, and administrative staff.   This includes overseeing all safety procedures and enforces there use.


 

 



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to spend prolonged periods of time standing during the operation of binding equipment while performing bindery operations. Employees in this class continually lift, carry, or otherwise handle printed material and paper stock weighing up to 40 lbs. and, occasionally, items or materials weighing up to 80 lbs. without the help of any mechanical devices, and up to 2,000 lbs. when utilizing mechanical devices such as fork-lifts or pallet-jacks. There is frequent stooping, bending, and reaching to make machine adjustments, remove misrouted materials and other operational activities. In most instances the employee is required to maintain a work pace consistent with the speed of operating machinery and/or the needs of the other workers.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  The employee normally works in well lighted, heated and ventilated areas. There is the possibility of cuts to fingers from knives, razor blades, and tools. The employee is exposed to skin irritations, unpleasant fumes and odors from acids, photographic processing chemicals. In addition, employee is subject to eyestrain and fatigue resulting from high intensity light sources, computer screens, and light shining through the top of the layout table. The employee is exposed to low frequency noise generated by machine operations and vibrations during production periods.
