POSITION SUMMARY:


 The Professional School Counselor provides counseling services that are comprehensive in scope, preventive in design and developmental in nature in the areas of academic achievement, college and/or career readiness and personal/social development for all students.  The Professional School Counselor acts as a change agent and student advocate helping ensure access and equity for all students supporting the system’s overall mission.  The Professional School Counselor for the 3D Scholars Program will collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, students and our college partners, Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) and the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), to ensure that all 3D Scholars students are successful and develop skills to help them succeed in the high school and college environment.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 PROGRAM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

Establishes and implements an effective comprehensive school-counseling program to serve the needs of students accepted in the 3D Scholars Program that is aligned with the memorandum of understand (MOU) for the 3D Scholars Program with the Unversity of Maryland University College (UMUC) and Prince George’s Community College (PGCC).

Establishes and implements a counseling program that incorporates career and college readiness components for students accepted in the 3D Scholars Program. (i.e. college aspirations, academic planning, student enrichment, college and career exploration and selection processes, assessments, college affordability planning, admissions and postsecondary transition).

Collects, analyzes and uses data to develop and implement the counseling program specific for the students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program (i.e., attendance, grades, behavior referrals, standardized tests, etc.).

INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PLANNING

Counsels students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program in educational planning using their academic strengths, interests, and aspirations for the specific pathways offered through the 3D Scholars Progam with PGCC and UMUC.

Counsels students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program in developing decision-making skills and provides access to related experiences to help them attain an understanding of their interests, skills and abilities as part of college and/or career readiness.

Collaborates and consults with parents/guardians, educators, students and other stakeholders to promote educational, career and life planning opportunities.

Provides career and college readiness counseling and information for students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program.

Recruits and supports students through the 3D Scholars Program application process and participate on the student selecetion committee.

Coordinates the dual enrollment process for students identified in the 3D Scholars Program.

PREVENTIVE AND RESPONSIVE SERVICES

Utilizes appropriate counseling strategies (i.e., individual, group, classroom, and school-wide) in order to provide preventive and responsive services to support culturally diverse student populations.

Facilitates appropriate interventions to promote positive student academic performance, behavior and attendance for students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program to be successful in the program.

Serves as a member of the School Instructional Team and Student Services Team to identify students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program in at-risk situations and proactively implements positive strategies to increase student success.

SYSTEM SUPPORT

Assists students, teachers, parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding the aspects of the 3D Scholars Program and articulation to PGCC and then to UMUC.

Works collaboratively with PGCC and UMUC to present student and parent program/informational sessions on 3D Scholars Program.

Works collaboratively with Student Services team members to provide wrap-around and other support services to students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program.

Establishes and strengthens the 3D Scholars partnership with UMUC and PGCC.

Provides appropriate referrals to assist parents/families and students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program to benefit from essential school and/or community resources in order for students to be successful in the program.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Maintains an accurate and confidential record-keeping system of all counseling services and activities pertaining to students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program.

Provides accurate academic advisement to students (i.e. courses needed for graduation, danger of not graduating, early graduation, advance placement, etc.) accepted into the 3D Scholars Program.

Submits monthly data or program reports in a timely fashion (i.e., personal education plan, scholarship, counselor/principal agreement, yearly calendar, etc.) as needed for students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program.

Works with the members of Student Services, UMUC, and PGCC in compiling data that reflects the results of the 3D Scholars Program goals by increasing student achievement, student attendance and parental involvement as needed.

Assists in monitoring counseling-related, student academic records (i.e., 504, FBA/BIP, transcripts, SIT and SST action plans, personal education plan, student service learning, career assessment, etc.) for students accepted into the 3D Scholars Program.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Participates in professional development through workshops, conferences and monthly meetings to remain abreast of current counseling trends and best practices.

Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Thorough knowledge of Dual Enrollment and higher education programs;

Thorough knowledge of Prince George’s County Public Schools policies and procedures;

Knowledge of college admissions requirements and understanding financial aid requirements for students of varying needs;

Knowledge of student support principles;

Experience in program management;

Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills with the ability to establish good relationships with many different types of individuals and groups;

Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills;

Knowledge of electronic data collection;

Ability to utilize technology;

Excellent communication skills with diverse constituents (teachers, parents, children, board members); clear writer, facilitator and public speaker;

Proven ability to proactively lead by example, effectively manage admissions process, and respond positively to feedback; and

Knowledge of college entrance and placement exams to include Accuplacer, PSAT, SAT, and ACT. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 Master’s degree in School Counseling, with two years of experience as a school counselor preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
