POSITION SUMMARY:
The
International Student Counselor provides specialized counseling services to
International and English Language Learner (ELL) students and their families.
The Counselor serves as a resource for school based Counselors and staffs in
addressing the unique needs of this diverse population and also facilitates the
smooth cultural adjustment and transition of students into Prince George's
County Public Schools.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Enrolling,
placing, and orienting international and ELL students and their families;
Evaluating
foreign secondary school transcripts for the awarding of high school credits;
Working with
Counseling and ESOL staffs on academic and social concerns of international and
ELL students;
Providing
workshops for school staffs on topics to enhance their skills in working with
diverse populations;
Providing
parent workshops on topics to assist families of international and ELL student
adjust to and take advantage of services in Prince George's County Public
Schools;
Providing
school based and county wide programs for students and parents that address the
social, academic, and career needs of international and ELL students;
Identifying
and assisting in accessing community based resources for international and ELL
students and their families;
Utilizing
‘Newcomer Groups’ and counseling strategies to provide support in the process
of cultural adjustment to a new community and a new school system;
Providing
system support for students identified as at risk;
Establishing
relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community agencies in
order to support the social, academic, and career needs of this population;
Conducting
summer registration during the summer months;
Supporting
special programs initiated by the International Student Counseling Office; and
Performing
other duties assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Demonstrated knowledge of national,
state and local school counseling standards and adheres to professional and
ethical standards of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA);
Bilingual (English and Spanish or French
or Arabic speakers preferred);
Thorough knowledge of Prince George’s
County Policies and Procedures;
Some knowledge of foreign school systems
and familiarity with the process of second language acquisition to ensure
appropriate placement of students;
Knowledge of the immigration process and
the effects of acculturation on families are also preferred;
Skills and competencies in
cross-cultural counseling;
Experience in working with parents of
English Language Learners;
Ability to work occasional evening and
Saturday hours;
Knowledge of growth and developmental
stages of children and adolescents;
Ability to read, take notes, and
interpret written materials;
Ability to work effectively as a team
member and independently with staff, students, and parents;
Ability to use a computer and other
technological equipment;
Ability to use the computer for on-line
scheduling;
Excellent oral and written communication
skills with the ability to speak effectively to both large and small groups;
and
Excellent human relations skills with
the ability to establish good relationships with many different types of
individuals and groups.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s
degree in School Counseling, with three years of experience as a school
counselor preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training
that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
