POSITION SUMMARY:
The Program Coordinator
– Fire Science Cadet Program is responsible for implementing and monitoring the
High School Fire Science Cadet Program.
The Program Coordinator will ensure students are provided both academic
and technical skills to pursue a variety of options after graduation to include
preparation for Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Academy, apprenticeship
programs, degree programs at two and four-year colleges, private career schools
and industry-sponsored education and training.
The incumbent will serve as the liaison to the Prince George’s County
Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (PGFD) for program development
and support. The Program Coordinator will ensure programs are designed to
prepare students for work in alignment with a college preparatory curriculum.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Coordinates
and evaluates Fire/EMS Department Cadet Program to ensure compliance with
local, state and national standards;
Prepares
course schedules within sufficient time to ensure instructor, resource and
training location availability as well as timely cadet notification;
Serves
as a liaison to High School Fire Science Cadet Program to ensure that the program
is implemented and that the programs of study are followed;
Coordinates
the High School Fire Science Cadet Program in conjunction with school staff,
office staff and the PGFD;
Monitors
program compliance and educator needs for program improvement and enhancement;
Coordinates
with appropriate Fire/EMS Training and Leadership Academy personnel and outside
agencies to ensure program consistency and quality is maintained;
Collects,
analyzes and uses data to develop and implement the program and makes
adjustments when needed;
Monitors
and assesses student achievement in class and assists in counseling students
following PGCPS guidelines in recommendations for entering, monitoring and
exiting the program;
Oversees
and monitors program to assist in learning process by ensuring an atmosphere
conducive to learning is present at all training activities;
Works
with and supports educators to ensure that the program curricula are followed
and troubleshoots concerns with the appropriate stakeholders;
Communicates
priorities as they relate to the specific program area and assists in the
development of strategies for continuous improvement;
Communicates
effectively with students, staff, parents, community and PGFD;
Conducts
planning meetings with PGFD to ensure all responsibilities and the Fire/EMS Training
and Leadership Academy’s needs are met;
Assists
with planning and conducting professional development for academy teachers;
Schedules
meetings, and develops agendas, minutes, and program reports in collaboration
with the Instructional Supervisor;
Coordinates
and facilitates open house orientations, program-specific activities, and other
specific events for parents and students;
Orders
equipment, supplies and materials for programs under the guidance and approval
of Instructional Supervisor;
Recruits
and supports students through application and registration process; and
Performs
other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Strong
instructional skills and a broad knowledge of curriculum;
Knowledge
of Professional Firefighting, Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Medical
Technician industry standards;
Demonstrated
leadership and administrative competencies;
Ability
to organize and prioritize the many aspects of the position; effective time
management, documentation and organizational skills;
Effective
human relations skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships;
Demonstrated
ability to coordinate complex operations and activities in multiple settings;
Experience
in a career academy program setting or industry experience required;
Ability
to work effectively and collaboratively with school administrators, classroom
teachers, post-secondary staff, and professional organizations in providing
rigorous academic experiences for all students;
Excellent
written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
Ability
to analyze student performance data; and
Proficiency
with computers, instructional technology and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel,
Power Point).
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree from
an accredited college or university with an emphasis in one of the Career and
Technical Education fields of instruction and course work in curriculum
development preferred. A minimum of five (5) years of successful full-time
occupational experience, to include experience as a firefighting instructor,
within the last ten (10) years required.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Holds or is eligible to
obtain a Trades and Industry teaching certification issued by the Maryland
State Department of Education.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
