POSITION SUMMARY:


  Performs responsible communications and clerical work in the receipt and transmission of message between the Transportation Office base station and buses equipped with radio units. An employee in this class is responsible for communicating with bus drivers, garage personnel, supervisors and Transportation Office staff via the radio base station, and performing clerical work for an office in the department. The work is performed under general supervision.   

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Receives, records and transmits telephone and radio messages circulating between the Transportation Office base station, school buses and Central Garage; maintains a log of such messages and tests emergency communication systems daily;

Records transmitted messages and refers them to the appropriate departmental staff so that emergencies may be responded to expeditiously;

Performs clerical duties including filing, typing, answering telephones, updating route sheets, disseminating incoming mail, etc.; and

Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of operating the less complex types of radio transmitting and receiving equipment;

Ability to type at the established rate of speed;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees;

Ability to transmit oral messages clearly and accurately via radio and telephone; and

Good interpersonal skills using tack, patience and courtesy.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 

High school graduate with some previous clerical experience, preferably including some experience in the assigned functional area; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position.

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
