POSITION SUMMARY:


This position will be responsible for providing instruction and case management services to high school students with intellectual disabilities at the Project SEARCH High School Transition Program designated community location.  Project SEARCH is a partnership program between Prince George’s County Public Schools, a local business, an adult agency, and the Division of Rehabilition Services. This program implements a one year school-to-work internship program for students with intellectual disabilities that combines classroom time with internship experiences in a real world setting. This combination of instruction and immersion in the workplace setting prepares students to learn the skills to obtain employment and meet employer expectations in a competitive work placement.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 Provides instruction and case management services for high school students with intellectual disabilities;

Implements “best practice” strategies in the classroom while recognizing individual learning styles and needs;

Develops and monitors IEP and transition goals for students based on individual preferences and skills;

Assesses student skills and facilitates work-based internship choices;

Participates in professional development associated with job duties and responsibilities;

Provides accommodations and modifications to materials and instruction to meet students' needs;

Communicates effectively with parents and supervisor on a regular basis;

Performs job skills training duties to assist with skills acquisition and problem solving;

Completes necessary evaluations, reports, other documentation and maintains records and follows required practices and procedures; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Ability to provide differentiated instructional techniques that inspire, motivate and meet the individual educational needs of all students;

Ability to develop and nurture an atmosphere and educational environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of all students;

Knowledge and understanding of strategies in monitoring and evaluating student performance in developing and implementing instructional plans to improve student performance;


Experience working with high school students with intellectual disabilities;


Knowledge and ability to develop and implement effective secondary transition plans, including work study experiences for students with intellectual disabilities;


Ability in integrating technology into curriculum;


Ability to work as part of a collaborative team;


Familiarity with "best practices" in the field of students with intellectual disabilities; and


Ability to work independently and effectively with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, office staff and other members of the school community.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


 Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education or related area. Five (5) or more years experience as a special educator working with high school students with significant cognitive disabilities.  



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Holds or is eligible for a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment.  Adminstrator I Certification preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and use fingers, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
