POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Assistant Supervisor for Autism, the Recourse Teacher – Twice Exceptional/Autism
is responsible for assisting in the identification and instructional support of
twice exceptional students, in collaboration with the Talent and Gifted
Supervisor, to ensure the implementation of the Individualized Education
Program (IEP) and Talented and Gifted Program (TAG) program. In addition, the Resource Teacher will
support the design and implementation of curriculum and professional learning
opportunities for staff supporting twice exceptional and autism
students.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Collaborates with new and experienced
twice exceptional and autism teachers as a mentor/advisor to support them in
the school Talented and Gifted and Autism program;
Conducts observations for the identification of
potential twice exceptional students;
Attends Individualized Education Program (IEP)
Team meetings for twice exceptional and autism students;
Develops and revises sample lessons for each of
the five pillars of twice exceptional strategies;
Provides coaching for special education teachers
on the development of IEP goals and objectives;
Conducts informal observations and
provides feedback to teachers of twice exceptional and autism students;
Conducts monthly meetings with middle and high
school academic resource teachers and TAG center coordinators;
Attends monthly meetings with TAG Supervisor to
complete screenings, identifications, and to coordinate professional
development;
Provides monthly professional learning
opportunities for general and special education teachers, school psychologists,
special education chairperson and other designated staff;
Collaborates with TAG Supervisor to develop
twice exceptional resources guides and documents;
Serves as a liaison between the
Talent and Gifted Office and school administrators to implement the Twice
Exceptional Supports to students with disabilities in the TAG program;
Provides support on evidenced based strategies
and behavior management support to students with autism;
Administers cognitive ability,
achievement assessments and education assessments as needed; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Five (5) years of successful teaching
experience with students with disabilities is required; specifically autism and
talented and gifted students;
Thorough knowledge of the special education
service delivery models and instruction;
Thorough knowledge of the general education and
gifted education pedagogy and current best evidenced-based practices;
Knowledge of the Maryland State Department of
Education Criteria for Excellence Guidelines for Gifted Education Programs and
COMAR regulations;
Formally trained in best practices in gifted
education, including meeting the social, emotional and intellectual needs of
gifted students;
Ability to collaborate with others;
Ability to use and interpret student
performance data; and
Effective oral and written communication
skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or
university in special education or related area. Master’s Degree preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Holds or is
eligible for a Maryland Standard Professional Certificate in Special
Education. Advanced Professional
Certificate preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
