POSITION SUMMARY:
Under
the direction of the Supervisor of Health Services, the incumbent in this
position performs technical work in the development of the Vision/Hearing
Screening Program and assures that the screening services are made available to
all students. This is paraprofessional work and is carried out according to
standard practices and procedures established by the Board of Education and the
State of Maryland.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Oversees
the operation of the Vision and Hearing Screening Program;
Instructs
others in administering screenings, as well as independently performing
screenings utilizing such instrument as the Titmus Vision Testor, Maico
Audiometer, and other vision screening equipment;
Screens
students in designated grades for visual acuity and color-vision perception;
Screens
students in designated grades for hearing with audiometric equipment;
Records
findings for students in permanent health folder;
Prepares
statistical reports of program for Supervisor of Health Services and the
Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene;
Provides
individual instruction to new staff on policies and procedures of the program;
Responsible
for maintaining an equipment inventory;
Attends
designated workshops and in-services in order to maintain proficiency and
knowledge; and
Does
related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Skill and good
judgment in conducting vision and hearing screenings;
Considerable
knowledge of the procedures, principles, equipment standards and methods of
vision and hearing screening;
Ability
to work well with students and staff;
Ability
to maintain clear, concise and accurate records; and
Willingness
to be flexible in scheduling work assignments.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED supplemented by three (3)
years’ experience using vision and hearing equipment or any equivalent
combination of expertise and training which provides the required knowledge, skills,
and abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
